A PhD is the most advanced form of postgraduate study. It is awarded on the successful completion of supervised research, verbal examination and final thesis. In the school, we promote research excellence, recognising that high-quality legal research may take many different forms. We use a variety of research methods across our projects.

Students are required to demonstrate adequate and appropriate progress on an annual basis. A PhD is awarded based on the quality of your thesis and your ability in an oral examination (viva voce) to present and successfully defend your chosen research topic to a group of academics.

PhD candidates have an employment contract with a department, research center or institute at Tilburg Law School. They are appointed for at least 32 hours a week to write their PhD thesis.
